Ever notice how an annual changes from year to year? Sometimes it
seems as though the only thing in life that's constant is change.

This is the look of Vignettes 72.° Instead of using pages and pages
of copy, our book is more or less concerned with ' personal articles
resembling the style of a magazine. The pictures themselves tell the
story.

Our staff has tried to give you an idea of what FMC life really
is all about. In that, we have included good, the bad, and the
usual. If we had a second chance, certainly there would be things we
would have changed. The staff can only hope it has recaptured a year
full of spirit, happiness, and involvement — the year 1972.

Francis Marion College named twelve members of its
first graduating class and three members of the junior
class to Who's Who in American Colleges and Univer-
sities for 1971-1972.

Students elected annually to Who's Who are top-
ranking juniors and seniors who have distinguished
themselves by their participation and leadership in
academic and extracurricular activities, overall citizen-
ship and service to the college, promise of future
success and usefulness, as well as contributions to the
college community. Nominations were madebyajoint
student-faculty committee, which submits names for
approval of the National Office in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

"Francis Marion College may be consid-
ered something of an experimental school,
established by a legislature that believed it
could serve as a regionally oriented,
state college. We might remember, even
when thoroughly frustrated — a condition
that is bound to come to most of us this
year — that we could be shaping here in
Florence a 'model' of the state college for
the future in South Carolina."

"I urge this student body, therefore, to
go-proudly about its task, like the Marines,
proud of your outfit and — well — not
necessarily ready to take on all comers —
because in this college we take on our-
selves every day."

COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

First Commencement Exercises were held Saturday,
May 13. The 5:00 p.m. ceremony saw the College
confer its first baccalaureate degrees as well as its
first honorary doctorate. In addition, Associate in Science
degrees were also granted to students in the technical
nursing program. The College granted a total of 130
degrees — 25 Associate in Science, 64 Bachelor of
Science, and 41 Bachelor of Arts.

Receiving the first honorary degree, the Doctor of
Humanities, was Dr. J. Howard Stokes. The Citation
which accompanied the degree recalled the efforts of Dr.
Stokes since 1956 on behalf of higher education for
the Pee Dee area.

A final first on the program was the singing of
the Alma Mater by the Francis Marion College Chorus.
A distinctively American tune, the Alma Mater is set
to the melody of "Chester" by William Billings. The
tune was a favorite of Revolutionary War soldiers and,
with the exception of "Yankee Doodle," is the only
famous Revolutionary War song of American origin.

Featured speaker for the occasion was James Dickey,
Professor of English and Poet-in-Residence at the Uni-
versity of South Carolina. Also speaking on the program
was James A. Rogers, Chairman of the State College
Board of Trustees, who addressed members of the grad-
uating class and the audience on "Francis Marion
College: The First Two Years."

The invocation and benediction were given by Diane
C. Schaeferand L. Franklin Elmore.
